The Macdonald Portrait Collection

The Macdonald Portrait Collection

In 1878, local granite merchant Alexander Macdonald commissioned a series of portraits depicting contemporary artists, painted on uniformly sized canvases. The portraits were mainly collected by Macdonald over six years, with some works commissioned by his wife after his death. There are 94 portraits in total, with over half being artist self-portraits.
