About MeScrap-booking has been a popular pastime since at least the middle of the 19th. It was considered an appropriate occupation for children and women, who were encouraged to collect mementoes and arrange them in books in an artistic way. All manner of items were included such as trade cards, photographs, poems and letters. A whole industry grew up around this pastime, providing beautiful leather bound albums as well as other materials. Some publishers also produced printed paper scraps for children to collect, which were extremely popular as they depicted many appealing subjects such as military and historical figures, flowers, animals and children at play. They were eagerly collected and swapped by many Victorian and Edwardian children.
