About MeThis piece of tartan is said to have come from Bonnie Prince Charlie's waistcoat. Once associated with the mast of the ship upon which it was believed that Charlie had escaped from the Highlands in 1746. The mast and tartan have since become dissociated: however in April 1899 the small piece of tartan was gifted by Mr Gordon of Ellon Castle to the REv. I. S. Loutet.

Whilst this may, or very well may not have been the case, this tartan and its associations remind us of the long shadow that the JAcobites, Charlies and Culloden have cast over Scottish history. These figures and events are so romanticised and so endearing that people still want to be able to make a personal connection to the figures and places involved. In this sense the scrap of tartan is rather like a saint's bones (or similar relic) in medieval times: something to venerate and place your hopes in.
