About MeMiriam Dokotliver's family moved from Poland and the Ukraine to Israel when she was a young girl, and her art reflects not only her own upbringing but the collective memory of her family. In this work Dokotliver uses photographs of herself as a child to represent her invented sister who could keep her company whilst her two brothers played amongst themselves.
As a young girl growing up in Israel Dokotliver used to watch her father as he sat listening to the radio when the lists of names of those who had survived the Holocaust would be read out time and time again. This memory left a lasting impression on her. Her name, printed out again and again, forms a list of the names of all those who were lost and whose names are now forgotten.
More About Me
The story behind an artwork and what it represents to the artist can sometimes be more captivating than the actual artwork itself. Here the artist creates an imaginary sister using old photographs of herself.
