About MeLocated on the corner of Schoolhill and Blackfriars Street this memorial comprises a recumbent lion designed by William McMillan and cut in granite by James Philip, of Arthur Taylor's yard. The lion reclines on a plinth at the top of s shallow curve of a few steps. A semi-circular screen with six Corinthian columns forms a solid screen-wall behind the lion. This screen and lion form the exterior of a war memorial, the interior of which is a grand circular chamber entered from the Cowdray Hall and the Art Gallery. Designed by A. Marshall MacKenzie the extension was officially opened and the memorial dedicated on 29th September 1925.

The site was originally reserved for the statue of Edward VII now on the corner of Union Terrace and Union St.
