About MeGentlemen as well as ladies were particular about adhering to the etiquette of dress, and would not have felt correctly attired without the appropriate accessories. The fashion for wearing hats was still very much in vogue in the 1950s. Top hats were worn at formal occasions, whilst the bowler was usually worn by the city gentleman with a well-tailored suit and coat and the trilby had been popular since the 1930s.
