About MeAyrshire whitework dress with short puffed sleeves and a wide square bodice fitted off the shoulder with a triangular panel of whitework embroidered with various fine needlepoint stitches filling the cut out stitches. Because this needlework technique was developed in the Ayr area in the early 1810s, it became known as Ayrshire whitework. Ornate hand sewn and embellished dresses were fashionable in the 1850s and 1860s. Difficult to launder and also uncomfortable for a small child to wear.
