The business benefited from Royal custom from 1857 and in 1884 the firm was granted the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria. The firm served 5 generations of the Royal family in all, dispensed for the Czar of Russia and has also been linked to Sir Alexander Ogston who pioneered the introduction of antiseptic methods at the city infirmary.
Further dispensaries were built as the firm expanded. As well as the familiar presence at 205 Union Street (later moving to 219 Union Street) there was a dispensary in the West End as the city expanded westwards, first at Wellington Place and later at Alford Place. Mr Kay was also closely associated with the dispensary at Balmoral under the reign of King Edward, to whom he was also presented.
