About MeToru Kaneko, born Tokyo, 1962 studied at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts under the famous maker and designer Professor Yasuki Hiramatsu. He graduated in 1988 and is now an Associate Professor at Tohoku University of Art and Design. He is a silversmith who specialises in objects and jewellery in a variety of metals. This ribbed and conical shaped silver bowl is double-skinned. The interior skin is plain hammer-raised from sheet silver. As the bowl takes its form the silver shrinks and wrinkles. Kaneko then flattens these wrinkles to create surface texture on the interior. The exterior skin is ribbed and this has been achieved by using metal stakes. Both skins have them been applied and soldered. Additional exterior surface texture has been created by using a sandblasting technique which gives an overall dabbled look.
