About MeThe nutmeg grater is an implement for grating nutmeg used principally during the period 1780-1840. There were two types: portable or table type. This portable and rustic grinder was used in the kitchen rather than at the table in the dining room. From the mid to late 18th century the drinking of punch - a brew of rum or brandy, fruit juice, sugar, and water laced with grated nutmeg and sugar - became fashionable and a nutmeg grater became an essential addition to the 'punch equipage'.More About Me
Popularised by the drinking of traditional punch (laced with nutmeg) from the late 18th century onwards, this would have been an essential kitchen implement of the period.
