About MeThis photograph is a portrait of James McBey's mother, Annie Gillespie. Annie wears a locket in which, upon her death, McBey discovered a poem tucked inside, which had been trimly torn from a newspaper and folded up. The poem was entitled 'The Suicide' and read as follows:

No one will weep
Or sigh that I had gone.
One half the uncaring world will sleep,
The other struggle on.

This is shocking in itself, but more so because Annie died by hanging herself in the cellar of the Union Grove apartment she shared with her son and mother on 11 December 1906. But considering she had been almost completely blind for at least fifteen years and had no friends who could have helped her read let alone cut out such a newspaper clipping, it is fairly certain that Annie had intended to die in this way for a very long time.
