About MeThese large chemist's jars were all hand blown in the early 19th century and were owned by Davidson & Kay "Chemists to the King". Although we know of other similar carboys, these are the only known examples with numbers and not Latin names on the outside. This numbering system was probably a way for chemists to keep the ingredients in their own preparations secret.

One of the last of the company's chairmen, George Shepherd, preserved and collected material from Davidson & Kay both before and after the business closed. After several years, George Shepherd gifted this large and nationally significant collection of material to the City in its entirety.
