29/11/1858:
A fearful typhoon passed over Swatow, commencing at 11pm on 21 September. [...] On following morning, when the gale was at its height, a storm wave 25ft. perpendicular, came in from seawards, sweeping everything before it, driving the ships from their anchorage over a long mud flat with not more than 2 or 3 feet water on it [...] it is said that upward of 200 junks were wrecked, and the loss of life amongst them is very great [...] British ship KINALDIE among the casualties. [Wreck sold by public auction] Loss of life has been very small among foreigners being confined to the mate and seven of crew of the GAZELLE and one European from the ANONYMA; but amongst the Chinese it is estimated at about 3,000.
