About MeThe sitter, James Gibbs (1682-1754), was born in Footdee, Aberdeen. He was an architect and designed St Mary's-le-Strand, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Radcliffe Library, Oxford and in Aberdeen the central portion of Robert Gordon's College and the west church of St Nicholas Kirk (this design was carried out after his death). Gibbs also designed the monument for Ben Johnson in Westminster Abbey and published 'A Book of Architecture' .

This mezzotint, after Williams' portrait in oils (Bodleian Library, Oxford), by McArdell, is a brilliant impession, in the first state, folio edition.
