About MeL.S. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of Northern England during the early 20th century. Because of his use of stylised figures and the lack of weather effects in many of his pictures he is sometimes characterised as a naïve 'Sunday painter' although his art is now highly prized and is celebrated in a purpose built art gallery on Salford Quays, appropriately named 'The Lowry'.

The works by Lowry in the permanent collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery are of sparcely populated townscapes but he is best known for his distinctive urban landscapes, peopled with numerous human figures who are often referred to as "matchstick men". For this reason this busy street scene, on loan from a private collection, is a particularly welcome addition to our displays.
