About MeThis Japanese mandala is fixed on an ivory stick and mounted with two different fabrics; one is beige silk damask with bamboo leaves pattern and the other is navy silk damask with fan, wave and plants patterns. It is lined with paper.

The mandala shows 10 realms and is usually called ‘Ten-Worlds Mandala’ or ‘Kanjin juppoukai zu’ 観心十法界図. The ten realms are: bukkai (Buddhist paradise), bosatsu (enlightened deities or bodhisattvas), engaku (Skt. Pratyekabuddha; usually translated into Japanese as byakushibutsu = someone who is “enlightened by contemplation on dependent origination"/"self-enlightened"), shoumon (Skt. S’raavaka meaning ‘hearer’/hearing the calling = someone who attains liberation without the direct guidance of a teacher), tendou (heaven), jinkai (the human world), shura (Skt. Asura =power-seeking deities), gaki (Skt. Preta = hungry ghosts), chikushou (Skt. Tiryagyoni = beasts), jigoku (Nakara or hell). At the centre is the character for heart/mind (JIN/kokoro 心).
