Dunkinty was one of the first new trawlers built at Aberdeen after World War Two. Many Aberdeen trawlers were lost during the war and the fleet that remained was ageing. Dunkinty was unusual in that it burned oil rather than coal to produce steam.
The vessel seems to have attracted a lot of attention when new - it features in several photographs in the museum collection. However, Dunkinty's hull design was not very successful; nor did oil burning prove popular. In the 1950s, local shipyards produced many motor trawlers to replace the old fishing fleet.
