A Fifie was a broad beamed vessel with a straight stem and stern. Another type, the Zulu, had a straight stem but a sloping, or raked, stern. Both used drift nets to catch herring.
Aberdeen began to grow as a fishing port in the 1870s because of herring. Drifters travelled around Britain and were based at Aberdeen during July and August. Kirkcaldy-registered vessels, such as Providence, were a common sight in the harbour. By the end of WW1, Fifies and Zulus had been replaced by steam drifters.
