About MeThis stencil was used to brand barrels of herring. The herring fishery grew rapidly in the late 19th century, the season began at Shetland in May and ended at East Anglia in December. Women followed the fleet, working as gutters and packers.

A herring crew consisted of two gutters and one packer. Herring was packed in barrels of salt and brine. Some barrel brands were trade names. Others referred to properties of the herring: 'full' was a fish more than 10.25 inches long, while 'matfull' was at least 9.25 inches, containing roe.

During the 1894 season, almost 6000 people were involved in the Aberdeen herring fishing. This included over 2500 gutters and packers and 267 coopers. Coopers built the barrels.
