About MeThe Girdleness Outfall Scheme was the centrepiece of a farsighted plan to address the sanitary requirements for the growing city of Aberdeen in the early 20th century. These original photographs capture the scope of this impressive engineering project, the results of which are still in use today.

There are two penstocks here to control the flow of sewage and to shut back the sea if necessary. The penstocks are raised and lowered by these two hydraulic cylinders. Here we see the masons' sheds and the construction of the small valve house which protects the workings. It was built with Rubislaw granite with Kemnay granite facings.
