About MeSepia photograph depicting two British soldiers in conversation after marching into Jerusalem through the Jaffa Gate, in a convoy led by General Edmund Allenby, on 11 December 1917. On this date the city had just been secured by the British Empire after the Battle of Jerusalem, or Jerusalem Operations, which began on 17 November 1917. Locals can be seen lining the streets to watch.During this time James McBey was Official War Artist in Egypt, having begun his service on 26 May 1917. The photograph is kept within a hardback photograph album, with faux leather overlay, along with a series of other related images.
This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this photograph.
