About MeBlack and white photograph depicting a group of troops standing in conversation while locals look on, taken in Jerusalem. The photograph was probably taken shortly after troops, led by General Edmund Allenby, marched into Jerusalem on foot, through the Jaffa Gate, on 11 December 1917. On this date the city had just been secured by the British Empire after the Battle of Jerusalem, or Jerusalem Operations, which began on 17 November 1917. The group may be about to pose for a photograph, as a camera man can be seen at the centre of the picture.During this time James McBey was Official War Artist in Egypt, having begun his service on 26 May 1917. The photograph is kept within a hardback photograph album, with faux leather overlay, along with a series of other related images.
This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this photograph.
