About MeThe capture of Trone Wood was a difficult and costly action which took place in July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. McBey visited the scene in early spring of the following year. The aftermath of the battle is given literal and symbolic expression in this depiction of broken trees and land entirely devoid of life. He spent a day or two working around Combles, where he made sketches of the shattered trees which provided the inspiration for this print.More About Me
The stark reality of the brutality of war, echoes of fallen soldiers standing waiting, supporting the fighting comrades, hoping for a better future.
