About MeThese tools were used not for cutting granite but for trimming lead. One way of cutting an inscription, a message, is to shape letters directly in the stone. This is done using chisels. Another way is to attach lead strips to stone. When this has been done the letters are carefully marked out on the lead. The letter-cutter then takes these tools and very gently begins to cut the lead by hand.

Gentle taps with a hammer and eventually these sharp tools have cut lead way to give beautiful letters. Lead letters are found on many gravestones.
