About MeAs the city, its harbour and trade expanded there was an ongoing and growing need to address the size and quality of the harbour area. It was clear that the area would need to be dredged and the course of the Dee diverted, which was effected between 1870 and 1873. However, the course of all harbour improvements were the subject of much controversy and debate. This late version shows the Dee being diverted, again, considerably to the south, through what is today Balnagask housing estate. This would have considerably altered the city: the Dee would no longer divide Torry from the city centre whilst Duthie Park would have been radically different in shape.G. W.
