About MeAberdeen’s mercat (market) cross was designed and built in 1686 by John Montgomery. It originally sat in the Castlegate immediately in front of the Tolbooth and was moved to its current location sometime between 1837 and 1842.

In 1995 a new column was commissioned by Aberdeen City Council at the same time as the Tolbooth was being developed into a museum. At that time it was decided that for its own safety and long term protection that the original column would be removed and placed on display in the Tolbooth Museum.
