About MeThe large box or miekle kist was ordered by Aberdeen Burgh Council on 15 February 1591 to be the place to store their civic archives. Aberdeen has the best civic archives in Scotland, partly because they were carefully stored in this kist.
The kist was stored in the what we know as the Civic Room of the Tolbooth from the 1700s. In the 1870s it was transferred to the newly built Townhouse and then to the top floor of the 1960s extension to the Townhouse. In 2014 the kist was returned to the Tolbooth where it can be viewed by visitors.
