About MeDuring oil exploration, core samples are taken from rock formations. These are analysed to check porosity and permeability.

Porosity measures how well rock holds fluid.

Permeability measures how easily fluids can pass through rock.

This rock was taken from a depth of around 2600 metres. It is made up of sandstone and shale. The oil is held in the porous sandstone and trapped by layers of impermeable shale. (The sandstone is brown, the shale is grey).
