About MeEric Olsen was born in Norway in 1903. He studied at the Oslo School of Art, St. Martin's School of Art, London and at the faience studio at Sèvres. He worked at Wedgwood as a designer and modeller in 1931 designing a range of Art Deco relief-moulded ornamental earthenware before officially joining Spode as a designer in 1934. It is said he had his own studio and he was given carte blanche to use any of the glazes and bodies at the factory. Olsen’s studio-type ceramics such as this vase were in stark contrast to the usual refined industrial productions of the Spode factory. In 1942 Olsen returned to Norway to work as a camouflage expert and after the war emigrated to the USA. This vase was donated to the Art Gallery by the company.
More About Me

The design on this vase looks like a series of overlapping fans. This piece was manufactured by Spode but the Norwegian artist also worked for the well-known potteries Sèvres and Wedgwood.
