About MeFor little boys at the end of the 19th century, fashions tended to resemble fancy dress, largely due to the enthusiasms of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for Scotland and the writings of Sir Walter Scot. Boys might be dressed as miniature soldiers, cavaliers, Scots and sailors. The sailor suit, which was a recreational outfit, was launched in 1846 when the tailor for the Royal Navy made one for Albert Edward, Prince of Wales.
More About Me
Sailor suits like this one were also popular with girls, with a skirt replacing the trousers. They are still common as girls' school uniforms in Japan, where they are known as "seifuku."
