About MeDuring the reigns of Charles I and Charles II the Edinburgh Mint struck several varieties of small copper coins called turners or bodles valued at twopence in Scots money.

As the illustration shows, the turners struck for Charles I from 1632 display a Roman figure II on the obverse between the letters CR. This has sometimes resulted in the attribution of these coins to Charles II whereas in fact the figure denotes their value.

The name 'turner' derives from the French city of Tours in which one of the principal mints of medieval Europe was located; bodle may come from Bothwell, the name of a Scottish mint-master.
