About MeWheelwright on a belt machine cutting mortices in wooden wheel hubs, or nave. He was working for D. Gray and Son, Cartwright. To the left can be seen stacks of uncut hubs and at the back wall what appears to be blanks for spokesThe wheelwright was a skilled man who needed know the properties of different woods (elm was preferred for hubs) and be technically proficient. In the era of horse-drawn vehicles a range of transport was being manufactured from very light carts to lorries for pulling industrial loads. Wooden wheels had to contend with the stresses of both heavy loands and those imposed by travelling over uneven road surfaces. The advent of the internal combustion engine saw a decline in the wheelwright's trade as factory made wheels came to the fore.
