About MePart of a set of core samples all from Dunlin and logged as coming from around 12,427ft feet (approx 4,000 metres) depth from drill head.

Although remote investigation of a potential resource bearing strata deep underground is possible, the results still need to be tested for likely amount of oil present, porosity of the rock and other factors. This requires samples of those rocks to be brought to the surface to be examined. This is done using a special hollow drill bit allowing a cylinder of rock to be recovered.

The samples here are thin metre long slices of some of these core cylinders and show the structure of part of the Dunlin reservoir deep under the sea bed.

Dunlin is now being decommissioned but had recoverable reserves of 363,000,000 barrels of oil.
