About MeCallinan Patent No. 502052, Registered Design No. 65591, Serial number 10021.

This machine dates from sometime after 1948 and was used to create a permanent wave, or perm, on ladies' hair. The heat clamps would be warmed up on the heating rods and then clamped to the hair wound around Bakelite cylinders.

It was used by Jessie Herbert at her home hairdressing salon 21 Constitution Street, Aberdeen. Jessie moved to Aberdeen aged 14 in 1934 to train as a hairdresser, originally living in Cairn Terrace. She met her husband Albert Herbert on Hogmanay 1936 and married the following July. They lived at Constitution Street until the houses were condemned in 1986.
