About MeAlthough Farquharson is best known for his snow scenes he also travelled widely, making several visits to Egypt. His artistic talents translated well into this very different environment and he produced many good paintings of the streets, the landscape and the people of Egypt, of which this is the largest and most ambitious.

Just as he had with his snow scenes, Farquharson has managed to capture the varied surfaces of the highly polished marble floor tiles and the flowing robes of the Arabs seated in prayer. The contrast between the darkness in the depths of the building and the strong daylight, which falls on to the roughly plastered walls of the mosque, conveys both the heat of the unseen exterior and the cool and quiet of the visible interior.

More About Me

How impressive is the feeling of scale and size in this scene? A holy place with a true feeling of awe.
