About MeJohn Linnell is now remembered as the father-in-law of Samuel Palmer and friend of William Blake but he was a prolific landscape painter and highly successful in his own right.

In 1852, Linnell took up residence at Redhill, where he rediscovered the mystical attitude to nature that inspired Blake and Palmer. He declared that it was the business of the artist not to imitate nature but to create spiritual perceptions of it. In this rustic idyll, a shepherd plays his pipes to his companions and a vision of rural England rolls out behind him.
More About Me

The shepherd and his flock seem sheltered in their corner of the world, safe from the wilderness without.
