About MeFlorence Reekie is a self-taught realist painter who is inspired by societal relationships with clothing and fabric. Using the AAGM collection to research the subject further, Florence developed ideas around fashion pollution, garment workers and throw-away culture. This commission work offers a visual meditation on waste in which various garments, regardless of their intrinsic value or condition; a wedding veil, mass-produced Liberty floral print and handmade Pitsligo lace handkerchief, are all ready to be discarded in a plastic bag. Florence explained: “We use recycling as a problem solver to an over-consumptive attitude to material goods. Often the very recycling bags we use are a single use plastic…As consumers we have power and there is a lot more we can do before resorting to recycling our garments.”
