About MeIn 1856 French artist Bonheur made a tour of Britain, where the major market for her paintings lay. Her enthusiasm for Scotland was stirred by an admiration for the literature of Sir Walter Scott and the animal paintings of Sir Edwin Landseer.

In the Highlands and Islands Bonheur busied herself noting the characteristics of native sheep and oxen. She was moved by the scenes of flocks of sheep being ferried from one island to another, which provided the inspiration for this painting, executed several years later. The memory of the Scottish sojourn never dimmed for Bonheur and her contact with Landseer proved to be a turning point in her artistic style.
