About MeSaltglazed stoneware circular butter dish and domed cover. Both the dish and cover are glazed in a blue-grey saltglaze with its characteristic mottled appearance. Before the glazing lines have been scratched on the cover to add decoration and divide it into 4 segments.
Saltglaze is achieved by throwing salt into the kiln when it reaches temperatures of 1000C. The heat causes the salt to split into its component elements of chlorine and sodium; they then combine with the silicates in the body of the piece to achieve a glass-like glaze, with a distinctive texture similar to orange peel.
