About MeThis stoneware small bowl has a Japanese shino glaze. Shino is a traditional glaze originally developed in 16th century Japan. Colours range from a milky white to orange, as evident in this example. The charcoal grey spotting in the centre is known as "carbon trap" where carbon (soot) is trapped in the glaze during the firing process.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
