About MeThis stoneware small bowl has a Japanese shino glaze. Shino is a traditional glaze originally developed in 16th century Japan. Colours can range from a milky white to orange, as seen in this example. The charcoal grey spotting is known as "carbon trap" where carbon (soot) is trapped in the glaze during the firing process. The bowl is also glazed in a pale green celadon and wood ash has been incorporated to achieve the brown mottled colour.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
