About MeThis small beaker is glazed in a combination of orange shino glaze, a traditional glaze originally developed in Japan and a pale green celadon, a type of glaze originating in China. Wood ash has also been incorporated to achieve the brown and black mottling. Svend Bayer has also deliberately left a circular area unglazed on one side of the beaker.
Svend Bayer was an apprentice at Michael Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery before travelling widely throughout Japan, Korea and South East Asia, studying wood-fired kilns. In 1975 he established his own pottery at Sheepwash in Devon, making wood-fired stoneware, incorporating local clays.
