About MeJean-Léon Gérôme (1824 –1904) was a famous French painter and sculptor and one of the most prominent exponents of the style now known as Academicism. His prolific output included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits and other subjects. His inclusion in the Macdonald series of artist's portraits was suggested by Thomas Woolner RA who described Gérôme and Meissonier in a letter to Macdonald on 4 August 1884 as "the two best artists alive'. By December Gérômehad agreed to paint the portrait but it was not finished by the time of Macdonald's death later that month, being completed a year and a half later in July 1886.
