Keywords
The scuttle has a round end stamped "Rh.M.F 36 / APRIL 1916 / DUSSELDORF / SP61" with a screwed on handle. The front is raised on two tubular legs welded to the body and a tubular handle is welded to the upper surface. The shovel is of similar construction and stamped "G / H / 27" with a short tubular handle.
It was taken from France during the war by Alexander Murray Macdonald, originally in the 6th Gordon Highlanders but later entered the Cameron Highlanders. He fought at Hill 60 (Ypres Salient), the only 6th Gordon Highlander to survive the battle. He was wounded twice during the war.
