John Gray was the second son of John Gray and Margaret Gordon and he was born 1860 at Barbank, Portsoy. His father was a railway engineer who died in a railway accident. He was adopted by a Mr A. Patterson who had a small farm (Muiryhillock) and a butcher's business in Portsoy - his signature is at the end of indenture. After completing his apprenticeship, J.G. Gray worked in Glasgow, Kemnay, Jarrow (Palmer's yard) and again at Kemnay where he was chief engineer at the quarries. He remained there until his death in 1912. He was involved in the removal of the large block of granite from Kemnay which was used for the statue of King Edward VII. He lived at Rowan Bank, Kemnay.
