About MeFerdinand Gosselin trained as an academic painter in Paris but soon came under the spell of the plein-air movement which advocated painting real scenery in the open air rather than imagined historical scenes. He began painting in the Forest of Fountainbleau just outside Paris and there met Henri Joseph Harpignies (1818-1916) who confirmed his preference for painting pure landscape. Later he encountered Jean-Babtiste-Armand Guillaumin (1841-1927) and other Impressionist artists whose influence led to Gosselin adopting their style of painting, as can be seen in this gentle, undramatic, unpeopled view of a small town in the area of Seine-et-Marne.
