About MeThis brown silk dress was worn by Eliza Cruickshank at her marriage to George Phillip in the parish of Daviot, Aberdeenshire, in 1874.

The skirt is combined with a fashionably tight-boned bodice, with ruched sleeves, and satin bands on the cuffs and tails. The interior ties show the development and the construction of an early bustle. However, it is not yet as pronounced as bustles from the following decades. There is a pocket for a watch on the left side of the bodice. The dress was worn with a parasol. After the wedding, both were worn as a Sunday best outfit.

More About Me

Although white was popular for Royal brides, thrifty Victorians often chose darker alternatives which could be used again for "best" or for church.
