About MeThis portrait of Alexander Walker, who was President of the Mechanics Institute in Aberdeen from 1878-1885, was painted in one hour, in the Song School, Aberdeen. The artist, Slade Professor Alphonse Legros, painted it before art scholars and 500 other members of the public in January, 1880. The event was described in 'Bon-Accord' (3 January 1880) an article accompanied with witty cartoons of artist, sitter and spectators. The event was organised as a fundraiser for a proposed Art School, which was to open alongside Aberdeen Art Gallery five years later, in 1885.
