About MeWilliam Powell Frith painted scenes of everyday Victorian life and became one of the most successful, most popular and most highly paid of Victorian artists. Although the Aberdeen collector Alexander Macdonald, who commissioned this portrait, did not own any other works by Frith, he would have known his work , which was widely reproduced and would have met him through attending the annual dinners of the Royal Academy in London - Frith was elected to the Royal Academy in 1852. Frith was also a good friend of the Aberdeen artist John Phillip who had settled in Kensington where Frith also had a home.

Firth has masterfully rendered the image of Alexander MacDonald. The painting almost looks real with his rosy cheeks and the fine white hairs delicately highlighted to frame his face.
