About MeAberdeen Painter's Society tableaux, on the city's Links, depicting the dignity of free labour and labour movement. The Aberdeen branch of the Scottish society (trade union) was formed in 1889 with the encouragement of the famous North East socialist James Leatham. The painters' society had over 100 members in its first year of existence and a year later, in 1890, had a representative on Aberdeen's Trades Council. At the time of its formation the branch was one part of a larger city-wide movement of workers organising themselves. The society was sufficiently strong to win wage increases in 1893. In 1895 the painters co-operated with associated trades such as joiners, plasterers and slaters, to form a federation of building trade workers.
